LOS ANGELES—Carolyn Kubota, a nationally acclaimed trial and white collar defense lawyer and former federal prosecutor, has joined Covington’s Litigation and White Collar Defense and Investigations practices in Los Angeles.
Ms. Kubota has served as lead counsel on high-profile investigations, criminal trials, and high-stakes commercial litigation matters, representing clients in a range of industries, including life sciences, health care, and technology. She has extensive first-chair trial experience with an undefeated record in over 20 trials in state and federal courts.
“Carolyn is a world-class litigator with an exceptional track record of trial success, and her tenacity and depth of experience will be highly valuable to our clients,” said John Hall, chair of the firm’s global Litigation practice. “Carolyn’s core practice, particularly her experience in high stakes matters for pharmaceutical clients, fits perfectly with our long term goals to grow both our Los Angeles and global litigation capability.”
“I am delighted to join former colleagues and long-time friends at Covington,” said Ms. Kubota. “I was drawn to the firm’s collaborative culture, diversity, and broad base of clients, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry, and look forward to building upon the firm’s momentum in Los Angeles and across the firm.”
Ms. Kubota has deep experience handling high profile state Attorney General investigations in the pharmaceutical industry. She has recently served as lead national counsel for a major pharmaceutical company in a series of matters related to the marketing of opioid pain medications, including multiple state Attorney General investigations. In addition, she has served as lead national counsel for the same company in a multi-state investigation by 47 state Attorneys General into allegations of consumer fraud in connection with the sale and marketing of the company’s mesh implant products.
Prior to entering private practice, Ms. Kubota also served for 12 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles. There, she successfully tried complex criminal trials and served as Deputy Chief of the Major Frauds Section, supervising the investigation and prosecution of financial fraud cases.
Ms. Kubota joins Covington’s expanding Los Angeles office, which opened in early 2015. Covington’s Los Angeles office boasts a highly experienced trial team, with over 50 trials among them, and four former federal prosecutors.
