Diversity Recruiting Initiatives

At Covington, we strive to put our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values into action every day. We recognize that diversity enriches our culture, enhances our work with clients, and strengthens the profession.

Covington lawyers bring a wide variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and life experiences to our practice. The firm emphasizes DEI principles in its recruitment, retention, development, and promotion practices. We are intentional, deliberate, and focused on what we want to achieve –a diverse, equitable, and inclusive firm.

On Campus Engagement

In the U.S., we support a variety of student groups at law schools, such as the Women's Law Association, the Black Law Students Association, the Latino Law Students Association, the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, the South Asian Law Students Association, OutLaw, and Law Veterans Organizations. We not only provide financial support to these groups, but participate in meaningful ways, including speaking on panels regarding law firm life, attending job fairs and conferences, and meeting with law students in informal settings to discuss legal careers and to provide counseling on interviewing strategies.

In addition, the DC Road Show is a collective effort, by several major DC law firms, to recruit Black law students to the Washington, DC market. DC law firms go “on the road” to visit law schools to meet with the Black law students in more informal settings and share with them the opportunities and advantages related to a career in Washington, DC. Covington Partner, Michael Baxter chairs the DC Road Show and Covington lawyers are active participants in Road Show events and panels.

Pipeline Initiatives

An important aspect of our recruiting is our participation in diversity pipeline programs. We sponsor and partner with several organizations to increase the pipeline of diverse talent and generally promote diversity in the legal profession. We strive to not only diversify our attorney ranks, but also to create opportunities for expanded access to the legal profession.

We are proud sponsors and participants of the below organizations and programs.

PracticePro

PracticePro is a national company bridging the gap between law school and law practice. Through their 1L Diversity Scholar Program, 1Ls receive extensive coaching and recruiting opportunities with partner firms.

JD Advising Scholars

The JD Advising Scholars Program assists underrepresented 1L students through one-on-one tutoring before and throughout the first semester of law school, providing access to study aids, and law firm mentorship.

Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO) Law

We sponsor Catalyst by SEO Law to provide support to students during the law school application cycle. This includes LSAT preparation, application strategy & review of materials, as well as panels and roundtable discussions with admissions offices.

We also support the SEO Law Fellowship program, which organizes internships for talented, underrepresented students who have been accepted to top law schools. We partner with SEO to host interns in our U.S. offices each summer.

Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) 1L Scholars Program

We partner with LCLD to hire 1L summer associates in our U.S. offices. The 1L Scholars Program gives law students the opportunity to work side-by-side with attorneys from Covington and a partnering client in select offices. The program provides scholars with exciting professional experiences while introducing them to the value of relationships and building networks with LCLD Members. Applicants must participate in the LCLD Scholars Program and LCLD Scholars Virtual Experience, and submit a cover letter describing their commitment to advancing the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their community and/or the legal profession. This program is open to candidates from all backgrounds without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender identity or expression, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by applicable law.
