Suzan Charlton spoke to Club Management as part of a series of recommendations for managers in the Food & Beverage industry to protect from unexpected issues. Suzan suggests, “the best way for managers to ensure their clubs have proper natural disaster coverage is to read their existing policies carefully”. She elaborates, “not just checking the declarations and dollar figures, but the coverage grants, each policy’s definitions and exclusions, and any endorsements.”
She touches on the copious decisions that go into this preparation by providing a few examples, “For instance, physical damage by a hurricane should be covered.” She goes on, “But what about associated storm surge? Is that a flood? Are clubs still covered if the hurricane was downgraded to a tropical storm? Is there a waiting period before a club’s business interruption insurance is triggered? And is there a cap on the period of restoration?”
Suzan ultimately recommends, “A second opinion by an insurance coverage lawyer can also be helpful with understanding any policy language, which is sometimes subject to legal interpretation by the courts.”
