WASHINGTON—SportsBusiness Journal has named Covington partners Doug Gibson, Gregg Levy, Bruce Wilson, and Peter Zern to the highest tier in its 2016 “Power Players: Outside Counsel” rankings. Included in the SportsBusiness Journal’s “Chairman’s Club,” the Covington team is recognized in the “dominant tier in sports law” because of “a long history in the space” and a “deep bench of experienced day-to-day attorneys and negotiators.”
SportsBusiness Journal notes, “Few deals get done in sports without input from vaunted D.C.-based firm Covington & Burling.” The article highlights Covington’s position as “the top outside counsel to the NFL” and notes the firm’s wide-ranging work on behalf of clients including the NHL, NBA, U.S. Tennis Association, WWE, and UFC. It specifically mentions the firm’s roles in the $2 billion purchase of the Los Angeles Clippers and the $1.4 billion sale of the Buffalo Bills, its litigation work for the NFL, and its advice on media and digital matters for a variety of sports entities.
SportsBusiness Journal’s “Power Players” list profiles firms and lawyers who are “in the middle of the biggest deals in sports.” The compilation is the result of interviews with industry executives and was featured in the magazine’s June 27 issue.
