WASHINGTON—The D.C. Bar has named Covington its Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year. The award is presented to the firm for its excellence, achievement, and commitment to providing free legal services to the District’s low-income and disadvantaged individuals as well as organizations serving such individuals.
“We see pro bono legal service as a fundamental element of Covington’s culture and of our dedication to the best values of the profession,” said Alan Pemberton, co-chair of Covington’s Public Service Committee. “Our lawyers are leading advocacy and impact litigation on many of the most pressing legal issues of the day, while continuing to make time for the incredibly valuable work that we’ve always done to support the nonprofit sector, to serve low-income individuals, and to preserve the rule of law around the world.”
The District of Columbia Bar, created by the D.C. Court of Appeals in 1972, is among the largest unified bars in the United States. The precipitating force for the D.C. Bar’s creation was the legal community’s desire to have a single organization that could uphold the ethical standards and rules of professional conduct, including pro bono service.
