Jeremy Spector Named NLJ Sports Law Trailblazer
November 9, 2021
WASHINGTON—The National Law Journal has named Jeremy Spector to its second annual list of Sports/Gaming/Entertainment Law Trailblazers, a recognition of legal professionals who have made significant marks on the practice, policy, and advancements of sports, gaming, and entertainment law.
Asked about the path that made him a trailblazer, Jeremy told The National Law Journal, “Covington has always had a top-tier tax practice, and it has represented professional sports leagues and clubs for over half a century. The confluence of these two areas led, in the 1990s, to the creation of the firm’s sports tax practice. That practice didn’t exist at any other law firm. Although it was then, and to some extent still is today, a novel practice, it’s a natural outgrowth of our ability to provide deeply technical tax advice and our intimate familiarity with the business of sports.”
Jeremy’s practice involves tax planning, IRS controversy work, and the structuring of corporate transactions, with particular emphasis on advising professional sports leagues and teams. His sports clients include the National Football League, the National Basketball Association, the National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, Fenway Sports Group, the United States Olympic Committee, and dozens of professional sports clubs. His work encompasses such matters as the purchase and sale of sports franchises, public and private stadium financing, player compensation, franchise and network valuations, and the tax treatment of sponsorship, licensing, and broadcast agreements, both domestically and internationally.
