BRUSSELS—Cecilia Malmström has joined Covington’s Global Public Policy Practice in Brussels as senior advisor.
Cecilia served as the European Commissioner for Trade from 2014 to 2019. Her previous roles include European Commissioner for Home Affairs (2010-2014) and Minister for European Union Affairs (2006-2010). She was a Member of the European Parliament from Sweden from 1999 to 2006.
“Our global team of lawyers and former diplomats and senior government officials help clients solve their most complex problems at the intersection of law and policy anywhere in the world,” said Doug Gibson, Covington’s Chair. “We bring decades of experience and judgment in commercial diplomacy gained at the very highest levels of corporate and government practice, and Cecilia will provide helpful insight on European trade and policy issues for our clients, particularly in the technology industry.”
“Cecilia’s reputation as a forward-looking policymaker and formidable negotiator precedes her,” said Sebastian Vos, chair of Covington’s Global Public Policy Practice. “It gives me immense pleasure to welcome her to the team, where I feel she will be able to make an immediate impact.”
At Covington, Cecilia will focus on the intersection of trade and tech policy, as well as providing counsel on the legislative process, particularly when it comes to the European Union. She will work closely with members of the firm’s Global Problem Solving practice – a team of lawyers and policy professionals, including more than 100 former diplomats and senior government officials, that brings its significant experience to bear on the types of complex problems that involve both legal processes and governmental institutions.
“I am delighted to join Covington,” said Cecilia. “Policymakers and businesses alike face important global challenges in the years to come. Increasing trade tensions and the creation of new trade barriers, geopolitics, climate change, and the impact and regulation of new technologies – these all create both risks and opportunities for governments and corporates worldwide. I look forward to helping Covington’s clients address these challenges.”
Cecilia has a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Gothenburg and also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.
