Catherine Dargan and Mike Riella Named 2022 Dealmakers of the Year by The American Lawyer for leading Merck’s $11.5 Billion Acquisition of Acceleron Pharma

WASHINGTON—The American Lawyer has named Covington lawyers Catherine Dargan and Michael Riella as “Dealmakers of the Year.” The annual feature showcases lawyers whose flexibility, innovation, and ingenuity resulted in turning “clients’ dreams into reality.”

Covington’s client, Merck, agreed to acquire Acceleron Pharma, an American clinical stage biopharmaceutical company, in an $11.5 billion merger. The acquisition gave Merck access to Acceleron’s rare-disease drug candidate sotatercept, which is in a late-stage study to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure. 

The Covington team included Catherine Dargan, Mike Riella, Emily Leonard, and Drew Fischer.
