WASHINGTON—The National Law Journal has named Jonathan Wakely a “DC Rising Star,” recognizing him as one of the region’s 40 most promising lawyers age 40 and under.
In his National Law Journal profile, Jonathan discussed his most significant accomplishment of the past year, saying it was leading “the team that secured national security regulatory approvals for Univision’s $4.8 billion merger with Televisa to create the largest Spanish language media business in the world.” Asked to share a key to his success, he said, “National security lawyers must understand the government’s concerns and address those concerns in the manner that produces the most favorable outcome for your client. You don’t win fighting the U.S. government on national security.”
Jonathan practices at the intersection of national security and the private sector, advising clients on a range of significant international trade, cross-border investment, national security, supply chain security, and public policy matters. He regularly represents clients before the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), the Committee for the Assessment of Foreign Participation in the United States Telecommunications Services Sector (better known as “Team Telecom”), and the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) in proceedings related to the mitigation of foreign ownership, control, or influence (FOCI).
