WASHINGTON—Covington was honored at the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project (DCVLP) Annual Benefit as Pro Bono Partner of the Year for the firm's work helping domestic violence survivors and at-risk children in the Washington D.C. community.
Covington has co-counseled with DCVLP to represent many survivors of domestic violence in order of protection, custody, and divorce matters. In a recent pro bono representation, Covington successfully obtained a civil protection order for our client, requiring her abusive ex-partner to stay away from our client, her mother, and her children, and forbidding him from contacting her in any way.
With the help of hundreds of well-trained volunteer lawyers each year, DCVLP provides comprehensive legal services to survivors of domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, sexual assault, and other forms of gender-based violence, and to vulnerable children living in dangerous situations. Every year, DCVLP helps over 2,100 clients escape violence and move toward safety and stability.
Since its founding in 1919, Covington has maintained a strong commitment to public service. The firm encourages all of its lawyers to participate in pro bono work and devotes significant resources to finding pro bono projects that reflect the diverse interests of its lawyers. Covington’s pro bono work is anchored in meeting local needs and serving economically disadvantaged individuals and families in our surrounding communities, but the firm also has a long history of serving vulnerable clients and important causes throughout the U.S. and the world.
