Covington Ranks First in American Lawyer's Pro Bono Scorecard

WASHINGTON—Covington ranked first overall in the American Lawyer's 2023 Pro Bono Scorecard, which ranks Am Law 200 firms by the depth and breadth of pro bono engagement by U.S.-based lawyers. The firm also ranked sixth in the American Lawyer's 2023 Pro Bono International Report.
The scorecard considers the average number of pro bono hours per lawyer and the percentage of lawyers who performed more than 20 hours of pro bono work.
"Covington provides a wide range of pro bono opportunities for its lawyers, so they can find something that interests them," said Alan Pemberton, chair of Covington's pro bono committee. "Some lawyers care about specific issues, and others like the contact with individual clients."
“We have people who want to handle big court cases and others get into representing individual military veterans, and find that work so different from their billable work, and so gratifying. If you get someone a service discharge upgrade, get them onto the VA health care system, then suddenly they are much more employable, it can really be just a tremendous amount of benefit to a client for not a huge amount of work,” Alan said.
Since its founding in 1919, Covington has maintained a strong commitment to public service. The firm encourages all of its lawyers to participate in pro bono work and devotes significant resources to finding pro bono projects that reflect the diverse interests of its lawyers. Covington’s pro bono work is anchored in meeting local needs and serving economically disadvantaged individuals and families in our surrounding communities, but the firm also has a long history of serving vulnerable clients and important causes throughout the U.S. and the world.
