November 2, 2023
WASHINGTON—The National Law Journal named Covington an ESG and Community Impact Leader for the second year in a row.
In The National Law Journal’s profile, Dan Feldman, who co-chairs the ESG and Business & Human Rights practices, shared the firm’s priorities on ESG work. “We advise financial institutions, technology companies, clients throughout the energy sector, and a range of multinational companies on decarbonization strategy, corporate governance, sustainability disclosure, climate mitigation, human rights risks, institutional culture and social responsibility, ESG transactions, and help clients drive towards carbon neutrality.”
When discussing the firm’s most significant cases of 2022, Dan outlined how the firm filed an innovative Environmental Complaint pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act on behalf of the NAACP, stemming from the Jackson, Mississippi water crisis. "This resulted in the first EPA investigation launched by its newly created Office of External Civil Rights Compliance under its Office of Environmental Justice and is among the highest-profile environmental justice matters in the country," said Dan.
In addition, as the profile states, Covington helped The Coalition for Green Capital to secure the creation of a Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which will have $27 billion to finance various clean energy technologies in tandem with State-based green banks and the private sector.
As Dan stated, the most satisfying aspect of the firm’s ESG work involved "creating recommendations for robust corporate culture programs that align clients’ business objectives with broader social justice and civil rights goals in a way that improves cultural practices, advances diversity and inclusion, and positively impacts their employees, customers, and communities.”
The ESG and Community Impact Leader Award honors firms focused on legal leadership in the Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) field. Winners were chosen based on the impact of their legal initiatives on communities and stakeholders.
