SAN FRANCISCO—Covington was recognized as Asian Americans Advancing Justice - Asian Law Caucus's Pro Bono Honoree at its 51st anniversary celebration. Covington was honored for the firm's work with the Asian Law Caucus (“ALC”) on the Chang v. County of Siskiyou case, “challenging the brutal targeting of Asian Americans by the Sheriff and other county agencies.”
ALC, the ACLU of Northern California, and Covington filed a civil rights class action in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California against Siskiyou County and its sheriff, Jeremiah LaRue. The suit alleges that Siskiyou County and Sheriff LaRue have engaged in a sweeping campaign to harass and intimidate Asian American residents that includes racial profiling in traffic stops, restricting access to water, and using unlawful liens. The suit claims that the enforcement of water, property, traffic, and cannabis-related laws has been used to target the county's increasing Asian American population.
ALC celebrates 51 years of fighting with Asian American and Pacific Islander communities for civil rights and systemic change that builds a more just and caring world.
