WASHINGTON—Covington was recognized by the American Academy of Pediatrics with its "President's Award for Outstanding Service" for supporting the AAP and other medical organizations in their efforts to challenge state bans on gender-affirming care. The AAP's President’s Certificate for Outstanding Service recognizes outstanding contributions and personal dedication to the mission, vision, and core values of the AAP and to the health, safety, and well-being of children. This distinction is given under special circumstances and stands apart from the Academy’s annual awards by honoring exceptional individuals who have broadly demonstrated dedication and commitment to the mission of the AAP and to children over the long-term.
For several years, Covington has led an effort by the American Academy of Pediatrics and nearly two dozen other leading medical and mental health organizations that are pushing back against multiple states’ laws banning gender-affirming care for transgender adolescents. The team has drafted and filed amicus briefs in numerous cases challenging these bans, which serve to educate the courts about the science supporting and benefits of gender-affirming care.
The pro bono team is led by Jean Veta, Cort Lannin, William Isasi, and Michael Rosenthal. Team members also included Nicole Antoine, Daniel Bernick, José Girón, Noah Goldberg, Michael Lanosa, Emily Mondry, Ariel Mor, Dylan Silva, and Emily Vernon.
Covington has demonstrated a strong commitment to public service.
