WASHINGTON—The American Lawyer has named Covington as its Product Liability Litigation Department of the Year. The publication also named Covington a Litigation Department of the Year finalist in the General category.
In its article “Product Prowess”, The American Lawyer highlights a number of significant wins where “Covington & Burling brought in surprise wins in first-of-their-kind cases when clients needed it most.” The wins included a “groundbreaking victory” for McKesson when Covington delivered a win for the defense in a bench verdict in the first bellwether trial to target distributors of opioids, as well as a “first-of-its-kind” jury trial win involving family members of opioid addicts who sued under Georgia’s Drug Dealer Liability Act and racketeering law. The article also featured Covington’s win in the first heavy metals in baby food trial in the country, where Covington obtained a directed verdict for the Hain Celestial Group after a two-week jury trial in the Southern District of Texas.
The article notes that in the past year, 12 lawyers argued before judges or juries – half of them for the first time. Every partner in Covington’s practice has tried cases, along with a number of counsel and associates.
