Megan Gates Appointed as President of the Boston Bar Foundation, Deepening Covington’s Involvement with Pro Bono Activities in the City of Boston
September 18, 2024
BOSTON—Megan Gates, a partner in Covington’s Boston office, has been appointed to serve as the President of the Boston Bar Foundation (BBF). In this role, Megan will work with the leadership and trustees of the BBF to help guide the organization’s strategy and its work in the city of Boston. The BBF’s mission is to promote justice by funding and promoting innovation in the delivery of legal services, facilitating access to legal counsel in underserved communities, and supporting the public service projects and pro bono work of the members of the Boston Bar Association.
Megan’s involvement with the BBF in this capacity reflects Covington’s deep commitment to, and support of, pro bono work by its attorneys in the communities in which the firm has offices. The American Lawyer ranked Covington first in average pro bono hours performed by lawyers based in the United States in 2023 and second overall in its annual Pro Bono Scorecard, which ranks Am Law 200 firms by the depth and breadth of pro bono engagement by U.S.-based lawyers. Covington was also ranked sixth in The American Lawyer’s 2024 Pro Bono International Report.
Megan’s personal commitment to the work of the BBF expanded in 2016, when she first co-chaired the John & Abigail Adams Benefit, which each year welcomes over 1,000 guests for an evening at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts. Since joining Covington in April 2023, Megan has been honored to introduce many of her colleagues to the work of both the BBF and the BBA. Megan is also Vice Chair of the Board of Directors of the Pine Street Inn and is a member of the Philanthropic Trust of the Boston Medical Center.
Megan has been guiding publicly traded and late-stage private companies, primarily in the life sciences industry, through capital-raising transactions, SEC reporting compliance and corporate governance obligations, as well as strategic mergers and acquisitions, for over 25 years.
