Covington Lawyers Recognized in Latino Leaders Magazine

NEW YORK—Several Covington lawyers were recognized in Latino Leaders Magazine. Gabriel Mesa and Veronica Yepez were named among Latino Leaders Magazine’s 2022 “Top Latino Lawyers,” while José Arvelo, Clovis Trevino, and Gustavo Akkerman were recognized as “Rising Stars.”
Gabriel leads the firm’s Latin America Corporate Practice Group. He advises companies on corporate transactions, including joint ventures, private mergers and acquisitions, financings and restructurings in Latin America and other emerging markets as well as in the United States.
Veronica is an experienced white-collar defense lawyer who regularly conducts cross-border investigations, represents corporate and individual clients before U.S. criminal and civil enforcement authorities, and advises on FCPA compliance. She leads Covington’s anti-corruption and investigations practice in Latin America. A tri-lingual lawyer, she draws upon her deep understanding of local business culture in Latin America and her on-the-ground experience to help clients operating in the region navigate complex cross-border compliance issues.
José specializes in cross-border disputes and has extensive experience representing clients in in high-value international arbitrations as well as transnational and multi-district litigation. José’s international arbitration work centers on representing multinational companies from diverse industries in connection with investor-state and commercial disputes spanning the globe, with a focus on Latin America. A native Spanish speaker, José also helps clients investigate and address allegations of bribery or other misconduct in Latin America.
Clovis is a lawyer in the firm’s international disputes practice. She specializes in public international law and international commercial and investment arbitration and represents private entities and States in high-stakes international commercial, investor-State, and State-to-State proceedings, including under ICSID, ICC, UNCITRAL, and UNCLOS rules and before the International Court of Justice. Fluent in Spanish, Clovis regularly handles disputes arising out of Latin America.
Gustavo advises clients in a broad range of domestic and cross-border merger and acquisition transactions, including public and private, ranging from strategic product acquisitions, division divestitures and joint ventures to large company sales and acquisitions. Gustavo, who grew up and previously practiced law in Brazil, is a dual-licensed attorney in New York and Brazil, and provides counsel to clients navigating the Latin American business and legal environments.
