Yohan Balan works primarily with Covington’s White Collar Defense & Investigations and Anti-Corruption teams on a wide range of matters. He assists institutions and individuals in high-stakes white collar investigations requiring representations before the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, U.S. Federal Government agencies, and investigation agencies outside the U.S. While Yohan’s investigations practice focuses on Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and other bribery-related enforcement actions, he also has significant experience handling matters involving environmental violations, mail and wire fraud, sanctions violations, terrorism financing, money laundering violations, procurement fraud, and employee self-dealing.
In tandem with his investigations practice, Yohan is regularly called on to conduct risk assessments to understand the state of corporate compliance programs, and advise on means to implement remedial measures in line with government expectations. He also has extensive experience conducting ad hoc and targeted risk assessments to help clients understand compliance risks to their ongoing operations and to help tailor enhancements based on individual legal and business requirements. He routinely assists transactional teams in conducting fast-paced regulatory diligence in connection with large corporate mergers, acquisitions, asset purchases, and divestitures.
Yohan is a dual qualified lawyer in the U.S. (New York and Washington, DC) and India.
Additionally, Yohan maintains an active pro bono practice assisting individuals on matters ranging from family law and immigration to unlawful detentions.
