Supporting Organizations and Entrepreneurs

We represent hundreds of community-based organizations, global NGOs and small businesses on a wide range of matters, including corporate governance, intellectual property, corporate formation, and employment law.

In so doing, we help these clients better fulfill their missions and expand their reach.

Representative Matters

Pressing for Criminal Justice Reform

The Marshall Project (TMP) is an award-winning nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization dedicated to covering America’s criminal justice system. Covington attorneys provide TMP with media law advice, including  on First Amendment, FOIA, copyright and privacy issues. We also advise TMP on its partnerships with other news organizations and media companies. Through our work, we help further TMP's mission to "strive to educate and enlarge the audience of people who care about the state of criminal justice."

Increasing Energy Access in Africa

OnePower Lesotho is an energy startup and social business whose mission is to bring electricity to underserved communities across the developing world and provide affordable, reliable electricity services to off-grid villages. A team of London and Seoul-based Covington lawyers helped OnePower submit to the Government of Lesotho suggested amendments to improve draft regulations for Lesotho’s renewable energy mini-grid market. Mini-grids involve small-scale electricity generation and offer a cost-effective solution for electrifying rural communities. The project underlines Covington’s commitment to sharing its market-leading knowledge and experience of the energy sector to help build an international best practice energy market in Africa, in particular utilizing renewable energy sources.

Promoting Sexual Health Education for Youth

Power to Decide is a national organization with programs targeted at preventing teen and unplanned pregnancy-- the organization's initiatives aim to provide trusted, high-quality, information on sexual health and contraceptive options without barriers or judgment. Covington attorneys advise the organization on trademark and intellectual property matters, as well as employment and corporate governance issues. The firm is proud to help Power to Decide empower young people through health education.

Supporting Youth Through Sports

Up2Us Sports is a leader in the sports-based youth development movement, harnessing the power of sports to reduce youth violence, promote health, and inspire academic success for kids in every community. Covington attorneys provide Up2Us Sports with ongoing support on strategy, corporate governance, contracts, and trademark issues. Our advice was instrumental to setting up the organization’s signature Coach Across America program, which places and trains the nation’s best and brightest role models to bring sports-based youth development to our most underserved communities.

Supporting Women and Girls in Tech

Academy Achievers is a non-profit in the UK committed to providing Black young women and girls access to education and career opportunities in STEM and AI to bridge the digital skills gap. Since 2022, a multidisciplinary Covington team has advised the organisation on legal matters that are important for its day-to-day operations, including a range of intellectual property, corporate, employment, ESG and privacy matters. Most notably, Covington advised Academy Achievers on its strategic collaborations and licenses for its flagship “#BeMeDigitalinclusion” mentoring program, which seeks to increase young Black women’s access to mentoring and career opportunities in the technology sector in the UK.

Expanding Access to Opportunity
